Cation resins are materials used in ion exchange processes to remove positively charged ions (cations) from a solution. They are typically polymers that exchange their bound cations with other cations in the solution. These resins are often used in water treatment, specifically for water softening and demineralization. 

Anion exchange resins are specialized materials used to remove negatively charged ions (anions) from a solution, primarily in water purification and other applications. They contain functional groups that attract and exchange with these negative ions. 

In this process, the raw coconut shell was (1) heated in an inert environment to temperatures between 450°C and 850°C, and reacted with oxygen (p_O2 = 1.1−5.3kPa) for some time, and (2) heated again in inert environment to activation temperature (850°C) to produce an activated carbon.

 Coal-based activated carbons are the most widely used type of activated carbon used in industrial and municipal applications today. It can be divided into four major categories: bitominous, sub-bitominous, anthracite and lignite, which vary in their characteristics due to pore size.

Granular activated carbon is made from raw organic materials (such as coconut shells or coal) that are high in carbon. Heat, in the absence of oxygen, is used to increase (activate) the surface area of the carbon; this is why these filters are sometimes referred to as “charcoal” filters.

Calcined anthracite is anthracite coal that has been heat-treated to remove volatile components and impurities, resulting in a higher carbon content and enhanced properties. It's used in various industries like steelmaking, aluminum production, and electrode manufacturing Calcined Anthracite Coal is a high-purity carbon material produced by heating anthracite coal to temperatures above 1200°C in a controlled environment. This process removes volatile substances and moisture, significantly increasing the carbon content and electrical conductivity of the product. CAC is widely used in the metallurgical industry for its low ash, low sulfur, and high fixed carbon properties.
